LIC. JOSÉ LUIS GÓMEZ MARTÍNEZ
TITULAR DEL JUZGADO SEGUNDO DE
PROCESOS PENALES FEDERALES DEL
ESTADO DE NAYARIT
I am aware that in the coming weeks you will issue a judgment in the case of Angel Amilcar Colon Quevedo, a Garifuna migrant and human rights defender who was detained and falsely accused of several federal crimes in 2009.
Angel, like many Central Americans, was forced to migrate due to his family’s precarious economic situation, especially considering the need to pay a highly expensive medical treatment for his late son who had been diagnosed with cancer.
However, while in the border-city of Tijuana Angel was detained and criminally prosecuted, when in fact he was a victim of human trafficking and should have been treated accordingly.
It is important to highlight that, according to the Istanbul Protocol that was carried out by two international experts, during and after his detention Angel was ill-treated and tortured.
The undersigning persons and organizations believe in Angel’s innocence and respectfully call on you to take into consideration the highest human rights standards at the moment of issuing your judgment, as well as the fact that Angel’s imprisonment is a result of several human rights violations.
